Nagano Gov. Yasuo Tanaka, who has shown stress-related symptoms since he retook the gubernatorial seat two months ago following a fallout with the prefectural assembly, said Friday he will undergo five days of ''fasting diet therapy'' in Ito, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Tanaka said plans to travel to the spa resort town in Izu on Saturday and check in at an Ito sanitarium where he will put under a restricted diet such as mix carrot and apple juice.

The fasting diet therapy is supposed to prevent life-style related diseases.

Tanaka's aides say his atopic dermatitis disease has deteriorated recently and he gained weight during the election campaign in late August.

''This is not for weight loss. I am simply trying a health therapy at a different location,'' Tanaka said, citing meetings at the prefectural assembly as a source of ''stress.''

The sanitarium in Ito is often used by politicians and celebrities.
